Wealden District Council – Resumption of Garden Waste Collection Service from Monday 20th April 2020
We are pleased to announce that, following some initial disruption to staffing levels due to Coronavirus the Council have agreed an arrangement with our waste contractor Biffa to enable them to resume the garden waste collection service from Monday 20th April 2020. We originally announced suspension of the garden waste service for a 4 week period but we have worked hard with Biffa under difficult circumstances to bring the service back after only a 3 week gap.
You will be aware that special social distancing measures to protect the public are still in place, and please note we will continue to keep staff availability under close review. Whilst we are hopeful a subsequent suspension of this service will not be required, should it be necessary in order to prioritise our essential waste and recycling collections, we will do so and of course inform customers immediately.
Please refer to the schedule of garden waste collections for your property and place the brown bin out for collection as normal by 7am on the next scheduled collection day from Monday 20th April onwards. You can find your next garden waste collection day, and also download your garden waste collection calendar for the rest of the year, from our website at https://www.wealden.gov.uk/ and use the Bin Day Search facility.
Although many people will have been making use of the time at home to keep their gardens tidy, please do not leave extra garden waste on top of or around the bin as it will not be removed. Please also do not overfill the garden waste bin or make it too heavy as this could result in the bin not being emptied or it getting damaged.
Please remember the local Household Waste Recycling Sites are currently closed and continue to help us by avoiding creating unnecessary waste until the tips can reopen. Please do not place excess garden waste in your refuse or recycling bin because it will not be emptied. Where possible please continue to compost at home. Advice on home composting can be found at: https://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/environment/rubbishandrecycling/whatyoucando/composting/. Don't be tempted to fly tip. Most residents in Wealden are very responsible, but for your information fly tipping is an offence and offenders will be prosecuted.
The sign up process for the garden waste service from 1st July 2020 is now open. You can sign up between now and the 8th June to ensure you receive the licence label for your bin for collections in July.
Our preference is for residents to sign up online using https://www.wealden.gov.uk/gardenwaste
especially as our staff are very busy dealing with the Covid 19 emergency. If you cannot sign up on line please phone 01323 443322 however, please understand we may not be able to answer calls as quickly as normal. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept new customers for the current garden waste collection service year, which ends on 30th June 2020.
We are very grateful to our garden waste customers for their understanding and support during this difficult time we all face together and, to ensure you are not disadvantaged in any way by the period the service was suspended, we will be extending the next garden waste service year starting 1st July 2020 by an extra month, making it 13 months for the price of 12 months. The licence label you will receive may still say it is valid until 30th June 2021 but we will not be asking customers to pay for July 2021 collections and the following renewal will start from the 1st August 2022.
